Andrew Philip Gies III, lovingly known as "Andy," passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of 80.
Born on January 28, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Andrew Philip Gies Jr. and Helen Gies, Andy lived a life defined by faith, service, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family.
Today, our hearts are broken as we lost the foundation of our family here on earth. Many people knew Andy as a veteran, a faithful servant at church, a man who could build or fix just about anything, and someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
To his family, however, Andy was so much more; we had the privilege of knowing him as the man who stepped into our lives nearly 50 years ago and chose to love us as his own and our mother unconditionally. Andy never did anything halfway. When his children wanted to do something, he went all in. Whether it was softball, swimming or many other activities, he showed up. He gave the kind of love, time, and patience that fathers give.
Andy shared 47 years with his beloved wife, Cecilia. Together they built a home that became the gathering place for their family—a place filled with laughter, Fourth of July celebrations, afternoons by the backyard pool, peaceful moments beside the koi ponds, and countless cherished memories. Their home was more than a house; it was the heart of the family.
Andy leaves behind a legacy of faith, humility, hard work, generosity, and unconditional love that will continue to shape the lives of all who knew him. His example reminds us that the greatest lives are often lived through quiet acts of service, steadfast commitment, and simply being there when others need you most. Even in the final months of his life, Andy was thinking of everyone else. He worked to prepare the house, wanting things to be easier when the time came. When he learned there were no more treatments for his cancer, he didn't ask for prayers for himself. He asked for prayers for his family. That was Andy. Always putting others first.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who prayed, visited, encouraged, and walked alongside Andy throughout his illness. Your kindness, compassion, and love carried them through some of the most difficult days they have ever faced.
Though he will be deeply missed, Andy's legacy will live on in every life he touched, every project he built, and every act of kindness he inspired.
Andy is preceded in death by his loving wife, Cecilia “Lynn” Gies; siblings, Thomas Gies, Marty Gies, Barbara Peck, and Jayne Woodring; parents, Andrew P. Gies Jr. and Helen Bell Gies; and brothers-in-law, John Peck, Pat Warner, Michael Johnson, and Luke Donato.
Left to cherish his memory, Andy is survived by his loving children, Brad Hudson, Allison Schnell (David), Amye Meyer (Jason), Amanda Torrance (Tyson), Andrea Denton (Keith), and Laura Conard (John); grandchildren, Alex, Avery (Tabitha), DJ (Lexi), Tori (Drew), Savannah, Valentina, Cole, Emily (Chelsea), Annabelle, Lily, Molly, and Alayna; great-grandchildren, Cecelia, Quinn, and Luka; siblings, Carolyn Donato, Carl Gies (Kendra), and Sullen Warner; brothers-in-law, Jim Woodring, Bill Johnson (Brenda), Dennis Johnson (Vickie), and Guy Wayne Johnson; sister-in-law, Becky Gies; and a host of extended family and close friends.
