Catherine Holmes

Dec 7, 1940 — Aug 15, 2026

Louisville

Catherine Holmes, 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 15, 2026, in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on December 7, 1940, the beloved daughter of Elmer and Maggie Vogt.

Catherine was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, generous heart, and the unconditional care she gave so freely to those around her. She was an amazing caregiver, always willing to help provide food, clothing, comfort, or whatever else someone might need. Her famous grilled cheese sandwiches were one of the many ways she shared her love, especially with children who needed a little extra care and kindness.

Catherine was a giving person who lived life with a laid-back nature and a forgiving heart. She never held a grudge and had an innocent, caring demeanor that made her special to everyone who knew her. Though she could be a bit naive at times, it was part of the genuine sweetness and goodness that defined her.

For Catherine, love was often expressed through food. Feeding others brought her joy, and she was just as happy feeding the wildlife outside her home, especially the squirrels she loved to watch and care for.

In her spare time, Catherine enjoyed traveling to Florida to visit family, where she treasured the time spent together and the lasting memories made along the way.

Catherine's love was found in the simple things—a warm meal, a helping hand, a caring heart, and time spent with family. Her kindness touched countless lives, and the memories she created will remain cherished by all who knew and loved her.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Catherine is preceded in death by her loving husband of 50+ years, Donn Holmes; siblings, George Vogt, Bob Vogt, Bill Vogt, Mickey Vincent, Betty Faith, and Rita Demaree; son-in-law, Victor Bright; and her parents, Elmer Vogt and Maggie Karcher Vogt.

Left to cherish her memory, Catherine is survived by her children, Gayle Bright, Donn Allen Holmes (Valerie), and Bruce Holmes (Kim); grandchildren, Hannah, Bruce, Russell, and Joey; great-grandchildren, Madison, Cassidy, Shawn, Laekin, Brantley, Avery, August, Keelan, and Natalie; sisters, Rose Leanhart and Carolyn Smith; and close family friend, Jim Southard.
