Donald Ray Riggs, age 88, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Donald was born on April 21, 1937, in Stanton, Kentucky, to the late James and Nanny Mae Riggs. He grew up in a large family and was proud to be the last surviving of nine siblings.
After serving his country honorably in the United States Army, Donald moved to Louisville for work. He began his career at General Electric and later worked for Ralston Purina. Through the years he built a life centered on family, hard work, and the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
Donald was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. Known for being outspoken, he was also a natural jokester with a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. A bit feisty and full of personality, Donald never hesitated to say what was on his mind and was known to let a few colorful words fly now and then. His stories from years gone by and his lively spirit kept those around him entertained.
He had a deep love for bluegrass music and could often be found listening to his favorite songs while reminiscing about the past. In his spare time, Donald enjoyed playing bingo and taking trips back home with Brenda, relaxing with a cold beer, and sharing long conversations with his favorite niece, Debbie Gatson.
Donald will be remembered for his strong personality, his humor, and the love he had for his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
Donald is preceded in death by his loving wife, Brenda Riggs; parents, James Sherman Riggs and Nannie Mae Jones Riggs; and 8 siblings, Jim, Wanda, Henry, Ronald, Alma, Patty, Morris and Cookie.
Left to cherish his memory, Donald is survived by his 4 children, Debbie Cordero (Luciano), Jane Johnson (Doug), Nancy Dunn (Chris), and Patty Riggs (Glenn Smith); 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; many nieces/nephews; special caregivers, Paula and Beverly; and a host of extended family and close friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Donald Riggs will be held at 12 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Louisville Memorial Gardens West Funeral Home, 4400 Dixie Highway. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, from 11 AM to 7 PM; and prior to the funeral service beginning at 11 AM, at the funeral home. Entombment at Louisville Memorial Gardens West will follow the funeral service.
