Edward “Eddie” Jefferson Mitchell Jr., lovingly known by many as “Speedy Eddie,” passed away on September 7, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of 72.
Eddie was born on December 2, 1953, to Edward and Nancy Mitchell. He spent much of his life working on automobiles, a passion that went far beyond simply being a job. He especially loved body restoration. Eddie had a true love for classic cars and model cars, and he was especially proud of his own Trans Am and1957 Chevy.
Many knew him as “Speedy Eddie,” a nickname that fit his personality perfectly. He was always busy, always on the go, and loved to talk—usually very fast! Eddie was outgoing, friendly, and very likeable, making friends easily wherever he went.
Eddie overcame many challenges throughout his life and showed great strength and perseverance. One of the greatest loves of his life was his mother, Nancy. When she became sick, Eddie cared for her with love and devotion. He was proudly a “mama’s boy” and loved his mother immensely.
In his later years, Eddie especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandbabies. Being with them brought him great happiness and created memories that his family will treasure forever.
When he wasn't working on cars, Eddie enjoyed watching television, especially boxing, murder mysteries, and gangster shows. He loved them all. When he was younger, fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. As a child and young adult, he loved spending time fishing and enjoying the outdoors.
Eddie will be remembered for his big personality, quick conversations, hardworking spirit, love of cars, and ability to make friends wherever he went. Most of all, he will be remembered for the love and joy he found in his family and loved ones.
Eddie is preceded in death by his loving wife, Holly Mitchell; son, Edward Joseph Mitchell; sister, Barbara Smith; and parents, Edward Jefferson Mitchell Sr. and Nancy Elizabeth Wade.
Left to cherish his memory, Eddie is survived by his children, Melissa “Missy” Pound and William “Coy” Mitchell; grandchildren, Vivianne Mitchell, Ashley Simmons (Josh), and Amy Perkins; great-grandchildren, JJ, Adley, Raelynn, Avery, and Josh; sister, Sharon Grider (John); a nephew and many nieces; and a host of extended family and close friends.
His stories, his laughter, his love of cars, and the memories he created with those around him will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.
A graveside chapel service will be held at 10:00 AM in the Fireside Mausoleum on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Louisville Memorial Gardens West, 4400 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky.
