Emogene “Jean” Perry Spear, age 90, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on July 27, 1935, in Chaplain, Kentucky, Jean lived a life marked by unwavering faith, tireless dedication, and deep love for her family.
Jean built a long and successful career at The Fashion Shop, where she worked for over 25 years. Through hard work and determination, she rose through the ranks to become district manager—a role she held with pride and grace. Even after retirement, Jean remained active and engaged in her community. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, served faithfully at her church, and contributed her time and energy as a board member for her condominium association. Her commitment to service reflected the same drive that defined her professional life.
Faith was the cornerstone of Jean’s life. She loved the Lord with all her heart and made it a priority to instill that same steadfast faith in those around her. Her spiritual strength was evident in every aspect of her life—from the way she served others to the joy she found in fellowship with family and friends.
Jean cherished time spent with loved ones. Her greatest joy came from being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She delighted in their accomplishments and milestones, always offering encouragement and love. Family gatherings were filled with laughter and warmth—especially during the annual sister trips that brought together Jean and her sisters for unforgettable adventures. These cherished traditions were among her most treasured memories.
She is survived by her sons Robert “Bobby” Spear (Mandy) and Keith Spear; brothers Charlie Perry (Vickie) and Bo Perry (Patsy); sisters Alice Miller (Bobby) and Nancy Vanover; grandchildren Jeremy VanMeter (Karen), Aaron VanMeter (Christina), Colton VanMeter (Talana), Krista Vineyard, Whitney Spear Branstetter (Austin), Shawn Spear, and Cody Spear; great-grandchildren Jeren, Sutten, Dylan, Gracelan, Ryan, and Talan, Teagan, Ledger, Maylee, Cohen and baby VanMeter on the way; along with a whole host of extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband James “Jim” Spear; daughter Sharon VanMeter; sisters Mary, Judy, and Shirley; and parents Oscar and Nanny Perry.
In addition to her devotion to faith and family, Jean found joy in simple pleasures—reading a good book or watching hummingbirds flit about outside her window. Small but mighty like the hummingbirds she adored, Jean faced every challenge with courage and grace. She never met a mountain she couldn’t climb.
