Homer Thomas | Visit Guest Book THOMAS, HOMER, loving and beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, died on May 23, 2010 after bravely enduring his battle with chronic kidney disease.
He was a selfless father and husband, always making his family his number one priority. He was born on April 18, 1917 to the late Frank and Annie P. (Truitt) Thomas in Chambers County, Opelika, AL. He was the oldest of five sons, Willie, Cornelius, Carlton and Oliver, who all preceded in death.
In 1943, on to his way to Chicago, IL he made a stop in Louisville, where he met Pellie Mae Johnson, who became his wife at age 27 on February 17, 1945. Pellie passed away September 28, 1988. To this union were born four children, William, Stephen, Jimmie and Helen. Jimmie passed away January 28, 2010.
Mr. Homer made Southern Star Baptist Church his home. He enjoyed mechanical work on cars and retired from construction work in the late 1980's. He had an amazing sense of humor, overwhelming kindness and love for life that made people gravitate towards him. He had a passion for music in his youth and wished to become a Bluesman - harmonica player. He had a third-grade education, but two of his children acquired college degrees. He was a truly humble and unique man that will be missed and loved by many who will forever remember his spirit, devotion, support and abundant love of life.
He is survived by two sons, William Thomas of Seattle, WA and Stephen Thomas (Kochurani) of Louisville; a daughter, Helen Lawless (Harry) of Louisville; sisters-in-law, Elisabeth Taylor of Alabaster, AL and Gensie Lou Thomas of Lanett, AL; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends in Louisville and over many states.
"To our dearest granddaddy; 'You will always be with us. You are always in our heart.'" His funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 2010 at his church, 2304 Algonquin Parkway, followed by burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Friends and family may visit at the church beginning 10 a.m. Thursday.
