Larry Gene Burke

June 1, 1945 — April 15, 2026

Louisville, Kentucky

Larry Gene Burke, 80, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026. Born on June 1, 1945, in Pike County, Kentucky, Larry was the beloved son of Frank and Kizzie Burke.

Larry dedicated more than 20 years of his life to education, serving as both a teacher and principal. He was deeply committed to shaping young lives, not only in the classroom but also on the court as a coach. He took great pride in mentoring students, encouraging them to succeed academically and athletically.

A devoted family man, Larry found his greatest joy in spending time with his loved ones. He cherished his role as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather, creating lasting memories on family camping trips to the lake—times filled with laughter, storytelling, and togetherness. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he treasured every moment shared with them.

Larry had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and even water skiing, embracing nature whenever he could. Whether casting a line or simply soaking in the peace of the water, he found comfort and happiness outside.

A passionate sports fan, Larry especially loved cheering on his University of Kentucky teams in any sport. He also enjoyed playing golf and looked forward each year to his trips to Daytona to attend NASCAR races—something he made a priority, often planning multiple trips a year to experience the excitement of the track.

Larry will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his commitment to education, and his love of life’s simple pleasures. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, both in his career and within his family.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Burke and Kizzie Belcher Burke; and 3 siblings, Arnold Burke, Barbara Todd, and Brenda Wade.

Left to cherish his memory, Larry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dot Burke; 4 sons, Derrick Burke, Shane Burke (Rachel), Cory Burke, and Shawn Burke; 7 grandchildren, Joseph, Jordan, Brianna, Savanna, Destiny, Jayden, and Emily; 2 great-grandchildren, Everest and Clarke; 3 siblings, Sharron Jones (Bob), Odetta Tucker (Walt), and Jerry Burke (Tamera); and a host of extended family and close friends.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
