Louise Barnes

July 29, 1929 — June 10, 2026

Louisville, Kentucky

Louise Barnes, 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Born on July 29, 1929, in Dyer, Kentucky, Louise was the beloved daughter of Willis and Virginia Hair. She lived a life defined by quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and deep love for her family.

Louise was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend. To those who knew her best, she was simply the best mother anyone could ask for. As a single mother, she courageously raised six children on her own, providing them with love, guidance, and stability through life's challenges. Though she never had a driver's license, she always found a way to get her children wherever they needed to be, proving time and again that determination and love know no limits.

Those who knew Louise would describe her as quiet, reserved, and mild-tempered. Beneath her gentle nature was an intelligent, capable, and dedicated woman whose strength spoke louder than words. She took great pride in her appearance, enjoying dressing up, looking her best, and sharing her beautiful smile with others. She loved attention from family and friends and brought warmth wherever she went.

Louise found joy in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid card player, especially enjoying games of Rook, and was a cherished member of the Wilderness Road Club. In her spare time, she loved shopping, working crossword puzzles, enjoying a good meal, taking long walks, and spending time at Bernheim Forest, where she appreciated the beauty and peace of nature.

Above all, Louise treasured her family. Her love, sacrifice, and example shaped generations, and the legacy she leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Louise will be greatly missed but lovingly remembered for her kindness, resilience, grace, and the countless ways she enriched the lives of others. Her memory will remain a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Louise is preceded by 2 brothers, Chester Hair and Ova Lee Hair; parents, Willis Hair and Virginia Carman Hair; and special friend, Donnie Fisher.

Left to cherish her memory, Louise is survived by her loving children, James Smallwood, Linda Frankum (Jerry), Pat Benningfield (Jim), Darlene Smith (John), Sharon Bryant (Tim), and Jenny Guenthner (Chuck); 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
