Major Harold Winston Embry Sr.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our father (Major) Harold Winston Embry Sr., who left this world too soon on February 7, 2025, at the age of 84 due to a tragic car accident. Born on August 24, 1940, Harold lived a life filled with service, dedication, and love.

As a devoted father, Harold cherished his children, Audrey Ratcliffe (Mike) and Harold Embry Jr. (Robin), nurturing them with unwavering support, unconditional love and guidance. In addition to his biological children, he lovingly embraced three bonus children, Diane Quire (Kerry), Virginia Willis (Richard), and David Good (Lisa), whom he regarded as his own, nurturing bonds that transcended titles.

Harold was a beloved grandfather to 17 beautiful grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, brother to Bruce Embry (Brenda) and uncle to Julie Flores. His cherished friendships, especially that with Karen Humble, Victor Korphage and Dan Schubert, were instrumental in shaping a life filled with laughter and shared experiences.

To all who knew him, particularly his adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Harold was a source of joy and strength. His stories, warmth, and vibrant personality created lasting memories that will be passed down through generations.

While the suddenness of his departure leaves a void in the hearts of his family and friends, the values Harold instilled and the love he shared will carry on. He lived a life defined by compassion, courage, and dedication, inspiring those around him to strive for the best.

Harold dedicated a significant portion of his life to the safety and well-being of the Louisville community. He bravely served in the fire department for many years, culminating in a remarkable career at The Louisville Fire Prevention Bureau serving as the Assistant Fire Chief, from which he retired in 1988. His contributions to the bureau shaped the standards and practices that ensured the safety of countless lives, leaving a positive impact that will be felt for generations. After his retirement from LFPB, he spent the next fourteen years serving as the supervisor of code enforcement for the Dayton Fire Department, where he retired in 2002. He was also a proud Veteran of the United States Army.

A true advocate for education, Harold passionately taught Fire Science at Jefferson Community College, where he inspired countless students to pursue careers in firefighting and emergency services. He later took his dedication to a national level by teaching at the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Harold’s commitment to educating future firefighters reflects his belief that knowledge and preparation are vital components in saving lives.

Outside of education and his professional duties, Harold enjoyed many joyful moments serving as a Trustee on the Board of the Black Mudd Fire Department, where he shared laughter and camaraderie with his dear friend, Chief Dan Schubert. Together, they exemplified the spirit of teamwork and dedication.

Harold was known for his unwavering integrity, generosity, and love for his family. He cherished the moments spent with his loved ones, imparting wisdom and laughter to all. His strong character and passion for service enriched the lives of everyone around him.

As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, we also celebrate the vibrant spirit that he brought to our lives.

In honor of Major Harold Winston Embry Sr., the family invites those he touched to celebrate his remarkable life and hold onto the precious moments shared. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten, as his spirit will continue to resonate within all whom he loved and inspired.

A memorial service will be held at Louisville Memorial West on Friday, February 14, 2025 from 10a - 2p with services and burial to follow immediately after. This is where friends and family can gather to honor and remember a man who truly made a difference in their lives.
