James Ernest Carter Jr.

January 7, 1956 — August 17, 2025

Louisville, Kentucky

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of James Ernest Carter Jr., who left this world on August 17, 2025, in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. He was 69 years old.

James was born on January 7, 1956, in Louisville to James Ernest Carter Sr. and Mary Lou Carter. A lifelong resident of the city he loved, James lived a life full of family, passion, and purpose.

He devoted 30 years of hard work to Ford, where he was respected by his colleagues for his dedication, leadership, and work ethic. Away from work, James wore many hats—but perhaps none more proudly than that of "Papaw." He deeply loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and cherished every moment spent with them. His happiest times were often the simplest: surrounded by family, sharing laughs, and just being together.

James was a man who liked to be in charge—he had a strong presence and a natural sense of leadership. That trait served him well not only in his career, but also in his role as President of the Western High School Alumni Association, where he poured his heart into keeping connections strong and school spirit alive.

An avid sports enthusiast, James enjoyed playing golf, softball, volleyball, and bowling. He never missed a chance to cheer on his beloved UofL Cardinals, and he always made time to catch a John Wayne western—favorites he could watch over and over again.

Gatlinburg held a special place in his heart. It was his favorite destination, a place of peace, family, and tradition.

James Ernest Carter Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and leadership. He will be remembered for his strong will, big heart, and the countless lives he touched.

James is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sylvia B. Lyda Carter; and his dad, James Carter Sr.

Left to cherish his memory, James is survived by his 3 daughters, Rhonda Lyda-Burke (John), Brittany Carter, and Lorraine Melton; 1 bonus daughter, Nicole Snyder; 9 grandchildren, William, Conner, Aiden, Dallon, Cambron, Taylor, Carter, Selena, and AJ; 2 great-grandchildren, Dahlia, Araceli, and Magnolia; his mom, Mary Lou Gaddis Carter; 5 siblings, Pam Keeling, Chris Carter, Charles Carter, Eric Carter, and Teri L. Dobson; many nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and close friends.
