Mary Jane “Janie” McNeill, 73, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on December 19, 1951, to Gus and Willie Ferreill, Janie was a lifelong resident of Louisville and a proud daughter of the city she so deeply loved.
Janie was the heart of her family—a devoted wife, loving mother, and steadfast friend. She was known for her unwavering faith, strong will, and the fierce love she had for those close to her. Her home was always open, her arms always welcoming, and her kitchen often filled with laughter, family, and the comforting aroma of a warm meal.
For over 35 years, Janie served as the dedicated lunchroom manager at Notre Dame Academy, where she became a beloved figure to generations of students and staff. Her presence there was more than a job—it was a ministry of care and consistency that left a lasting impression on the school community.
A passionate University of Louisville fan, Janie held season tickets and rarely missed a game. She traveled far and wide to cheer on her beloved Cardinals, most memorably in 2013 when she journeyed from Atlanta to New Orleans to witness both the men’s and women’s teams make history during the NCAA tournament. She loved gathering with her cherished "Glass Works Group" for spirited watch parties filled with camaraderie and Cardinal pride.
Janie was also affectionately known as the "Crazy Cat Lady," a title she wore with joy. Over the years, she cared for many feline companions, each one a part of her extended family and a testament to her big heart.
Her strength, humor, and loyalty will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Janie is preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Willie Ferreill; and a daughter, Robin McNeill.
Left to cherish her memory, Janie is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Stephen McNeill; a daughter, Beth McNeill (Vance) and a host of extended family and close friends.
