William "Bill" John Stewart III

December 2, 1943 — March 10, 2026

Louisville, Kentucky

William John Stewart III, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Bill was born on December 2, 1943, in Louisville, Kentucky, to William and Annette Stewart. A lifelong resident of the Louisville area, Bill was a man known for his kindness, loyalty, and deep love for his family. Although Bill was a lifelong resident of Kentucky, he spent 16 memorable years living in New York City, a place he absolutely loved. Bill often reminisced about his days in “old New York,” especially when watching movies set in the city, which always brought back fond memories of that special time in his life.

He was a proud graduate of Louisville Male High School, Class of 1962. Those who knew Bill would say there were few people as genuinely good-hearted as he was. He carried a great sense of humor, enjoyed making others laugh, and had a calm spirit that reflected the fact that he was always at peace with himself.

Above all, Bill was a devoted husband and a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose family meant the world to him. One of the great joys of his later years was the special bond he shared with Craig’s children, Will and Julia, who brought a bright beam of light into the last twenty years of his life. Bill also held a deep and enduring love for his mother, whom he cherished throughout his life.

Though he did not serve in the military, Bill was deeply patriotic and held tremendous respect for those who did. He was especially loyal and supportive of first responders—firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel—and devoted much of his time supporting the blood drives at Fort Knox in honor of the troops stationed there.

In his spare time, Bill enjoyed many simple pleasures. He loved cooking, collecting guns and coins, watching college sports and classic black-and-white movies, listening to all types of music, and proudly being “in charge of the remote.” His hobbies and humor brought warmth and joy to those around him.

Bill will be remembered for his loyalty, his patriotism, his gentle spirit, and the love he gave so freely to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the family who will forever cherish his memory.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, William J. Stewart and Annette Wallace Stewart; and daughter-in-law, Jessica Stewart.

Left to cherish his memory, Bill is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Beverly Stewart; 2 sons, Chris Stewart and Craig Stewart; grandson, Will; 3 granddaughters, Julia, Alley, and Emily; special cousins, Joyce Gregory (Tony) and Billy Gregory; 4 siblings; and a host of extended family and close friends.
